What Shilajit Actually Is, and Why Pakistan’s Mountains Matter
Shilajit is a blackish-brown resin that forms inside mountain rock over centuries as plant and microbial matter compresses under enormous pressure. As summer temperatures rise, the rock warms and pushes the resin out through cracks in the cliff face. Harvesters scrape it off by hand, usually somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 metres, and it then has to be purified before anyone can safely swallow it. How it forms up there
The material takes an absurdly long time to make. Layers of ancient vegetation get trapped between rock, and geological pressure slowly converts them into a humic substance dense in fulvic acid and trace minerals. Because that process depends on altitude, temperature and whatever happened to be growing there thousands of years ago, no two ranges produce the same thing.
Why Gilgit-Baltistan resin is not the same as Indian or Russian mumijo
Regional material varies in fulvic acid content, mineral profile, colour and texture. Resin from the high valleys around Hunza, Nagar and Skardu tends to be darker and stickier. Pakistani harvesters also work steeper, less accessible faces now, simply because the easy slopes were stripped years ago.
Russian mumijo from the Altai is chemically related but usually lighter and lower in fulvic content. None of this means one origin is automatically superior. What it means is that origin claims should be checkable, and a batch lab report tells you far more than a photo of a mountain ever will.
Salajeet, mumijo, mineral pitch
In Pakistan you will hear salajeet. Ayurvedic texts call it shilajit. Central Asian sources say mumijo or mumie, and older English writing calls it mineral pitch or asphaltum. Same class of material throughout. Worth knowing if you ever go looking at the research yourself, because papers use all of those terms. What’s Inside Shilajit That Does the Work
Three things account for nearly every effect reported in the research: fulvic acid, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, and a spread of trace minerals.
Fulvic acid, the carrier
Fulvic acid is the most abundant active fraction and the one you will see quantified on a lab report. It works as a carrier, binding minerals into forms the body takes up more easily, and it has antioxidant activity of its own. Decent Pakistani resin usually tests somewhere between 60% and 80% for fulvic and humic content combined. That number means very little on its own, though, without knowing which method produced it.
Dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and the mitochondria link
DBPs are the compounds tied most closely to shilajit’s reputation for energy. Research suggests they support mitochondrial function, which is where cells produce ATP. That mechanism explains something men often find strange at first: shilajit is sold as an energy supplement but contains no stimulant whatsoever. No caffeine, nothing that touches your heart rate. The effect builds quietly instead of arriving.
The “84 minerals” claim
Practically every brand on earth prints this. The figure comes from older analyses and gets copied endlessly, and it tells you nothing about quantity. What actually matters is what a mineral panel shows for the batch in your hand, and in particular whether the heavy metals came back below permissible limits.
Why raw material has to be purified
Resin scraped straight off a cliff contains rock dust, plant fragments, microbial content, and sometimes heavy metals absorbed from the surrounding stone. Traditional purification means dissolving it in water, filtering repeatedly, then reducing it under controlled low heat or direct sun. Sun-reduced material is what gets sold locally as Aftabi salajeet.
Skipping that stage is how contaminated product ends up on the market. It is also considerably cheaper, which is the whole problem.

Shilajit Benefits for Men: The Nine That Matter
Each one is split into what men actually notice, why it happens, and what the published research found. Where the evidence is thin, I have said so.
1. Steadier energy, no crash
Most men arrive here because they are tired in a way sleep does not seem to fix. What they describe after a few weeks is not a caffeine lift. It is flatter. The mid-afternoon collapse stops happening quite so hard.
If DBPs really do support ATP production, that fits: cellular energy improves gradually rather than spiking. Nobody has ever described shilajit as feeling like a pre-workout.
Direct human evidence on energy is limited, mostly pulled sideways from fatigue and performance studies rather than trials built around energy itself.
2. Testosterone: what the studies actually found
This is the claim that sells the product, so it deserves precision rather than enthusiasm.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Andrologia gave 250 mg of purified shilajit twice daily to men aged 45 to 55 for 90 days. Seventy-five completed it. Total testosterone rose 20.45% from baseline and free testosterone rose 19.14%, both statistically significant. In the placebo group, levels drifted down slightly over the same three months. DHEAS, a precursor hormone, climbed 31.35%.
Two caveats matter. The men were middle-aged, so the numbers may not transfer cleanly to a healthy 25-year-old whose levels are already fine. And the duration was 90 days. 3. Stamina and gym recovery
A study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition followed 63 recreationally active men, average age 21, over eight weeks at either 250 mg or 500 mg daily against placebo.
Among the stronger half of the group, the 500 mg dose produced a much smaller drop in maximal voluntary isometric contraction after a fatigue protocol: 8.9%, against 16.0% for placebo. In plain terms, the shilajit group held their strength better as they got tired.
That is a fatigue-resistance result rather than a raw strength result, and it is the single most useful finding for anyone training three or four times a week.
4. Fertility: sperm count and motility
An open trial in men with oligospermia used 100 mg of processed shilajit twice daily for 90 days. Twenty-eight men finished. Total sperm count rose 61.4%. Motility improved by 12.4% to 17.4% depending on when it was measured. Testosterone rose 23.5%, and malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress, dropped 18.7%. Liver and kidney profiles came back unchanged.
Small sample, no placebo arm. That limits how much weight those numbers can carry. The direction is at least consistent with the antioxidant mechanism, since oxidative stress is a recognised contributor to poor sperm quality.
Shilajit is not a fertility treatment. A semen analysis showing a problem is a conversation for a urologist, and shilajit at best plays a supporting role next to proper medical care.
5. Libido and performance, honestly
Testosterone influences libido, and the trials above show testosterone moving in men who were middle-aged to begin with. Plenty of users report improved drive somewhere in the six to ten week range, which is roughly what you would expect if hormones are the pathway. What the research does not show is any direct effect on erectile function. Shilajit has never been tested as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, and any seller claiming otherwise has invented it. Erectile difficulty usually signals something vascular, neurological or psychological that deserves a diagnosis rather than a jar of resin. 6. Strength and soreness
The 2019 trial also measured serum hydroxyproline, which is released when collagen breaks down. The 500 mg group came in lower than both the low-dose and placebo groups, pointing to less connective tissue degradation under training load.
For men lifting regularly, that is arguably the more interesting half of the study. Less collagen breakdown plausibly means shorter recovery windows, though soreness itself was never measured.
7. Stress and mental fatigue
Traditional practice classes shilajit as an adaptogen, meaning it is used to help the body cope with strain. Fulvic acid’s antioxidant activity gives that classification a reasonable footing.
Being straight about it: most of the supporting work here is preclinical, done in animals or in a dish. Men do report feeling less mentally frayed after a month or two. That is user experience, not trial data, and expectation effects are almost impossible to rule out.
8. Joints and bone after 40
The collagen finding applies to joints as much as muscle, and shilajit carries magnesium, calcium and zinc in trace amounts. Unani and Ayurvedic practice has used salajeet for joint stiffness in older men for a very long time.
Direct human evidence on joint pain or bone density does not currently exist. Treat this as traditional use with a plausible mechanism attached, not a proven benefit.
9. Iron and altitude
Fulvic acid improves iron bioavailability under laboratory conditions, and mountain communities have used shilajit for altitude sickness for generations. Both observations are old and repeated everywhere.
Neither has been confirmed in a controlled human trial. And anyone with haemochromatosis or existing iron overload should avoid shilajit entirely, for precisely this reason.
Those are the benefits worth expecting. Now the part almost nobody selling this will tell you.
What Shilajit Will Not Do
Getting expectations right is the difference between a satisfied customer and someone who bins the jar in week three.
It does not treat erectile dysfunction. Worth saying twice, because it is the most common misconception in this market. No published trial has tested it for ED. Marketing that promises otherwise is selling on desperation.
It will not paper over bad sleep, poor food or no training. Nothing in the research suggests shilajit overrides a five-hour sleep schedule. The men in these trials were not rescuing terrible habits. They were adding a supplement to an otherwise ordinary life.
It is not fast. Every meaningful result above came from 8 to 12 weeks of consistent daily use. Noticing something in week one is welcome, but it is not what was measured.
And the evidence base is genuinely thin. Cleveland Clinic’s assessment is worth repeating as a counterweight to supplement marketing: most shilajit studies are small, several are over a decade old, and a number have methodological problems. The testosterone and fertility work is the strongest of it, and even that involves fewer than 150 men across both trials.
Shilajit is a promising traditional substance with early supporting evidence. Calling it anything more than that does nobody any favours, least of all a buyer who then feels cheated.

Four reasons cover most cases of “I felt nothing”. The dose was too low, usually because “pea-sized” got interpreted in the wrong direction. The product was adulterated. Use was patchy, with three or four missed days most weeks. Or baseline levels were already healthy, leaving little room to move. That timeline only holds if you take it properly, and most men do not.
How to Take It: Dose, Timing, Method
Dose
Published trials used between 200 mg and 500 mg a day. A sensible starting framework:

Timing
Morning on an empty stomach is the most common approach and suits the energy use case. Training in the evening? Take it 45 to 60 minutes beforehand. Some men find late doses interfere with sleep, others take it at night with no trouble at all, so there is genuine individual variation here. Water, milk, or under the tongue
Warm water is cleanest and dissolves resin fully. Warm milk is the traditional method here and masks the bitterness, which matters more than you might think, because genuine shilajit tastes strongly bitter with a smoky edge. Our guide on taking shilajit with milk explains the method properly.
Holding it under the tongue is popular but unnecessary. No evidence suggests it absorbs any better.
Never use boiling water. Heat degrades the active compounds and there is no upside.
Getting it off the spoon
A small practical thing most guides skip entirely. Resin clings to metal like nothing else. Scoop your dose, drop the whole spoon into the warm water, and stir for about thirty seconds until it releases. Scraping it off with a finger wastes a noticeable amount across a month.
Season matters too. In a Karachi summer the resin goes soft and almost pours. In an Islamabad winter it sets hard enough to resist a spoon entirely, and standing the jar in warm water for a few minutes sorts that out without damaging anything. Cycling
No trial has run past 90 days, so continuous long-term use is untested rather than known to be risky. A common practical pattern is 10 to 12 weeks on, then two or three weeks off. Call it sensible caution rather than a research-backed protocol.
Ramadan and stacking
During Ramadan, after iftar or with sehri both work fine. Shilajit combines without known conflict alongside whey, creatine and standard multivitamins. If you already take an iron supplement, mention shilajit to your doctor, since fulvic acid may increase iron absorption.
Correct dosing also keeps you clear of side effects, which are real and worth knowing about before you start rather than after.
Side Effects, Safety, and Who Should Avoid It
The mild stuff
Nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, headache and a sore throat all get reported. These are usually dose-related and often settle if you lower the amount or take it with food. Some men notice increased body heat in the first fortnight. Our full side effects article covers each of these in detail.
Who should speak to a doctor first
- Anyone with heart disease or unstable blood pressure
- Men managing diabetes, liver disease or kidney disease
- Anyone with a bleeding disorder, or taking blood thinners
- Men with haemochromatosis or iron overload
- Anyone with an autoimmune or overactive immune condition
- Men actively trying to conceive, alongside any prescribed treatment
Heavy metals, the risk that actually matters
This is the one. Raw shilajit can carry lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury and thallium absorbed from surrounding rock. A 2025 analysis found some commercial shilajit products contained higher thallium levels than the raw material, which suggests the processing itself introduced contamination in those cases.
The only real protection is a batch-specific certificate of analysis from an independent lab, showing heavy metals within permissible limits. Not a generic certificate. Not a photograph of somebody’s laboratory. A report tied to the batch number printed on your jar.
Interactions
Shilajit may affect blood pressure and blood sugar. If you take medication for either, watch your readings when you start and speak to your doctor. Same goes for any drug with a narrow therapeutic window.
Signs you have gone too high
Persistent nausea, headaches, restlessness or acne appearing around week two or three usually means the dose is too much. Drop it rather than stopping altogether.

Almost every serious safety problem traces back to the same root cause: the product was not genuine. Which brings us to Pakistan’s real shilajit problem.
Original vs Fake Shilajit in Pakistan
The counterfeit trade here is large, well established, and the fakes have got considerably better.
What fakes are made of
Clay or mud, tree gum, molasses, coffee or chocolate, wax, and low-grade material stretched with fillers. The more sophisticated operations mix a small amount of genuine resin into a much larger base, which is enough for the taste and smell to pass a casual inspection.
Five checks you can run in a minute
- Water. Genuine resin dissolves completely in warm water and turns it deep golden-brown or reddish, with no sediment sitting at the bottom. Mud and clay settle out.
- Flame. A small piece of real shilajit will not catch fire. It may bubble slightly and turn to ash. If it burns readily, there is wax or plant matter in it.
- Cold. Twenty minutes in the fridge should make it hard and brittle enough to snap. It softens again in your hand.
- Taste and smell. Strongly bitter with a smoky, mineral edge. Sweetness means something was added. A faecal or chemical smell means it was never properly purified.
- Stretch. At room temperature, genuine resin pulls into a thread before it breaks. Too brittle or too runny is suspect.

Reading a certificate of analysis
A useful COA names the testing laboratory, carries a date, shows a batch or lot number that matches your product, lists heavy metal results against permissible limits, and states fulvic acid content along with the method used. Missing any of those, and the document is decoration.
Red flags worth acting on
- No batch number anywhere on the packaging
- “100% pure” or “lab tested” claimed with no report you can actually open
- Pricing well below market range
- A seller who cannot or will not tell you the harvest region or purification method
- The same stock photos appearing across several unrelated brands
Why cheap turns out expensive
Harvesting is dangerous, seasonal and slow. Purification takes days and loses a meaningful share of raw weight. A product priced well under the cost of that process has skipped part of it, and the part that gets skipped is almost always purification. The spread reflects grade, purification method, and whether independent testing is genuinely being paid for or just claimed. A 20 g jar advertised at Rs 1,200 sits below the cost of producing purified, tested resin. Somebody has absorbed that difference, and it was not the seller.
