How to Identify Pure Shilajit vs Fake: The Tests That Work and the Ones That Do Not

Home tests can rule out crude fakes. They cannot confirm purity. A water test, a flame test and a taste test will expose tar, clay, jaggery and shoe polish within minutes. None of them will detect heavy metals, and none will catch the one counterfeit material that passes every test in this article.

That material is leonardite, a naturally oxidised lignite coal. It dissolves in water like the real thing, behaves correctly in a flame, looks and feels convincing, and can carry elevated heavy metals.

So the honest answer comes in two parts. Home tests tell you what your shilajit is not. Only an accredited laboratory can tell you what it is, and whether it is safe.

What Fake Shilajit Is Actually Made Of

You cannot spot a fake without knowing what fakes are made from. They fall into five groups, and they are not equally dangerous.

Crude petroleum fakes

Coal tar, asphalt, ozokerite and, at the cheapest end, shoe polish. These are the easiest to detect and the most obviously wrong. They smell chemical rather than earthy, leave an oily film on water, and catch fire readily.

Kitchen fakes

Jaggery or gur, chocolate, coffee, molasses, clay and mud, bound together and moulded to look like resin. Common in informal markets because the ingredients cost almost nothing.

They give themselves away on taste. Real material is intensely bitter. Anything sweet is not shilajit.

Leonardite

This is the one that matters.

Leonardite is naturally oxidised lignite, a soft brown coal. It is genuinely a humic substance, which is why it behaves so convincingly. It dissolves into a dark liquid, it bubbles and carbonises under a flame rather than burning, and it contains fulvic acid.

What it does not contain are the dibenzo-alpha-pyrones that characterise genuine shilajit. It can also carry elevated heavy metals depending on the seam it came from.

Leonardite is why the standard list of home tests circulating online is incomplete. Every one of those tests, run correctly, will pass a leonardite sample.

Diluted or cut resin

Genuine shilajit extended with humic powder, glycerine, honey or water to increase weight. The base material may be real. The jar is still not what you paid for.

Dilution is hard to detect at home, because taste, smell and appearance stay broadly correct. Unusually soft resin at room temperature is a weak indicator.

Unpurified raw shilajit

Not a fake, but not safe either. Raw material scraped from rock contains stone, sand, plant matter, microbial contamination and whatever the surrounding geology contributed.

Some sellers present “raw” and “unfiltered” as a virtue. Traditional preparation has always involved purification, and there is a reason for that. Grit in the bottom of your glass is not a sign of authenticity. It is a sign the material was not properly processed.

Home Tests, and What Each One Really Proves

Run these on a small amount, roughly the size of a grain of rice. Use lukewarm water rather than boiling, and give each test a fair amount of time. It helps to know what genuine resin looks like first, and our shilajit image gallery shows the real thing in colour, texture and dissolution.

The water dissolution test

Drop a pea-sized amount into a glass of lukewarm water and stir gently. Genuine resin dissolves fully into a dark golden-brown liquid, sometimes closer to black depending on grade, with no grit at the bottom and no oily film on the surface.

Rules out: clay, sand, mud, tar, wax and most petroleum-based fakes. Cannot detect: leonardite, dilution, heavy metals.

Dissolution takes a few minutes and needs gentle stirring. Instant dissolution with vigorous fizzing is not a good sign either.

The temperature and plasticity test

Put a small piece in the fridge for twenty minutes. Real resin becomes firm and brittle, and snaps rather than stretches. Then hold the same piece in a warm palm for around thirty seconds. It should soften and become tacky enough to stretch.

That temperature-dependent behaviour is difficult to fake. Materials with a uniform texture, ones that stay soft in the cold, or ones that never soften in the hand, are usually not shilajit.

Rules out: many moulded and bound fakes. Cannot detect: leonardite, dilution, heavy metals.

The alcohol test

Place a small piece in isopropyl alcohol. Genuine resin largely holds together and does not dissolve. If it disperses completely, synthetic binders or additives are likely present.

The flame test

Hold a small piece to a flame with tweezers, over a non-flammable surface, and watch what it does.

Genuine shilajit bubbles and swells, then carbonises to a white or grey ash. It does not sustain a flame of its own. Coal tar, asphalt and ozokerite behave completely differently: they catch light, sustain an orange flame, and produce black soot.

Rules out: petroleum-based fakes. Cannot detect: leonardite, which passes this test identically, and anything to do with safety.

The flame test is often promoted as the definitive check. It is not. It is a good screen for one specific category of fake.

Taste and smell

Genuine shilajit tastes strongly bitter and earthy, with a smoky, mineral finish that lingers. The smell is earthy and slightly tarry, never chemical and never sweet.

Sweetness points to jaggery, molasses or chocolate. Blandness points to a filler-heavy product. A chemical smell points to petroleum.

Rules out: kitchen fakes and crude petroleum fakes. Cannot detect: leonardite, dilution, heavy metals.

Why Home Tests Cannot Confirm Purity

Two limitations, and they are structural rather than a matter of doing the tests better.

Leonardite passes almost everything. It is a humic substance, so it behaves like one. No amount of careful observation in a kitchen distinguishes oxidised lignite from genuine shilajit, because the difference sits at the level of specific marker compounds.

Home tests detect substitution, not contamination. Even if your material is unquestionably genuine shilajit, nothing you can do at home tells you whether it contains lead, arsenic, mercury or cadmium. Those are invisible, tasteless and odourless at the concentrations that matter.

This is not an argument against home testing. Run the tests. They catch the majority of cheap fakes and they cost nothing. Just do not treat a pass as proof.

What Only a Laboratory Can Tell You

Heavy metals

This is the part that actually affects your health, and it is why lab testing matters more than any purity claim.

Shilajit forms in rock over long periods, so it takes on the mineral profile of its source. That is unremarkable when the source is clean and the material is properly purified. It is a genuine problem when it is not.

Published testing of retail shilajit products has found lead and mercury above permissible limits in multiple brands, with further research documenting arsenic and cadmium in products made without quality control. Regulators including the FDA have issued warning letters to manufacturers over heavy metal thresholds.

Heavy metals accumulate. The symptoms of chronic low-level exposure are vague and easily mistaken for something else: fatigue, headaches, digestive upset, joint aches, changes in mood or memory. Heavy metals are measured by ICP-MS. If a report does not include a heavy metals panel, it has skipped the most important test.

Dibenzo-alpha-pyrones

DBPs are the compounds that characterise genuine shilajit. Leonardite does not contain them. Neither does humic powder, soil extract, or anything mixed in a kitchen.

Testing for DBPs, usually by HPLC, is the closest thing to a definitive authenticity check. It is also the test least often included on the certificates brands publish, which is worth knowing when you compare them.

Microbial testing

Relevant for any product harvested from the environment and handled by people. Yeast, mould and bacterial counts should appear on a full report.

Fulvic acid

Which brings us to the number everyone quotes, and almost everyone misreads.

The Fulvic Acid Number: Read It Properly

Two things are worth being clear on, because the marketing in this category depends on people knowing neither. Our explainer on what fulvic acid actually is goes further into the chemistry.

First, fulvic acid does not prove a substance is shilajit. Fulvic acid occurs in soil, compost, peat and leonardite. A high reading tells you the material is a humic substance. It does not tell you it came from rock at altitude.

Second, the percentage depends almost entirely on the test method. The same sample can return anywhere from around 30% to around 80% depending on how it is measured. That is not product variation. It is methodology.

The methods, and why they differ

ISO 19822:2018, based on the Lamar method, is the reference standard. It physically separates hydrophobic fulvic acid using an adsorption resin, then weighs the isolated fraction on an ash-free basis. It separates before it quantifies, which is why it is the benchmark.

Total organic carbon measures all organic carbon present without identifying which compounds provided it. It commonly returns figures 20 to 50% higher than separation-based methods.

UV-Vis spectroscopy measures light absorption in an extract. Shilajit contains many light-absorbing compounds, so the result is easily skewed.

Titration examines acid-base behaviour without isolating or weighing anything. The result depends on the extraction and the chemical model assumed.

So is a high percentage good?

Not by itself, and not without the method.

Figures of 70 to 80% for full-spectrum resin are difficult to reconcile with what the material is actually composed of, and they usually come from broad carbon measurements or optical estimates rather than physically separated fulvic acid. A number that high, quoted with no method named, tells you more about the marketing than the material.

The useful question is not “what percentage?” It is “measured how, by whom, and can I see the report?”

How to Read a Shilajit Lab Report

Most buyers have never seen a Certificate of Analysis, which is precisely why unverifiable images of them work so well as marketing. Six checks:

1. Is the laboratory independent and accredited? An internationally recognised laboratory such as Eurofins, or a national body such as PCSIR in Pakistan, means something. An unnamed “certified lab” does not.

2. Is there a traceable report number? A real report carries a unique reference. Original Shilajit PK, for example, publishes its Eurofins UK report number AR-25-Y7-003312-01 alongside PCSIR heavy metals results, which means the document can be checked rather than simply admired. That verifiability is the point, and it is rarer in this market than it should be. Our about page sets out where the material comes from and how it is handled.

3. Is the test method named? Especially for fulvic acid. A percentage with no method attached is not a result, it is a claim.

4. Does it cover heavy metals? Lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium at minimum. A certificate showing only fulvic acid has omitted the test that matters most for your safety.

5. Does it relate to the batch you are buying? Reports should carry a date and, ideally, a batch reference. A certificate from three years ago tells you about a batch that sold out long ago.

6. Does the seller send it on request? Ask. A brand that tests will send the document. A brand that does not will send you a photograph of a jar.

Red flags on certificates

Cropped images with the laboratory name removed. No report number. No date. Results that are suspiciously round. A logo that does not match the laboratory’s actual branding. A layout that differs from that lab’s standard template.

What to Check Before You Buy

Sourcing and grade

Genuine shilajit is collected from high-altitude rock. In Pakistan that means Gilgit-Baltistan and the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges, at altitudes typically above 3,000 metres.

Grade terminology matters too. Aftabi salajeet refers to sun-processed material, a traditional preparation method with a specific meaning rather than a marketing word.

Specific sourcing claims are a good sign, but only alongside documentation. Anyone can write “Himalayan” on a label.

Purification

Ask what processing was done. Proper preparation involves dissolving, filtering and drying to remove rock, sand and organic debris, with the finished resin free of grit.

Treat “raw and unfiltered” as a warning rather than a selling point.

Form

Resin is the traditional form and the easiest to assess by eye, taste and touch. Powders and capsules are more convenient and considerably easier to adulterate, since you cannot see or feel what is inside. If you are buying capsules, the lab report matters even more. Realistic price

Genuine shilajit involves collection at altitude, purification and testing. It cannot be very cheap.

Seller signals

What a serious brand does: publishes named lab reports with report numbers, states its sourcing region specifically, describes its purification process, uses proper packaging such as amber glass rather than plastic tubs, and answers technical questions directly.

What an unserious one does: posts screenshots of certificates with no identifying detail, makes sweeping health claims, cannot say where the material came from beyond “Himalaya”, and pressures you to buy quickly.

The Buyer’s Checklist

Before you buy:

  • named laboratory, with a report number you can quote back to them
  • heavy metals panel included, not just fulvic acid
  • test method named, particularly for fulvic acid
  • specific sourcing region, not just “Himalayan”
  • clear description of purification
  • realistic pricing for the market
  • no sweeping health claims

When it arrives:

  • run the water test, the temperature test and the taste test
  • check for grit, oily film or sweetness
  • confirm the resin firms up cold and softens in the hand

What to Do If You Think You Bought a Fake

Stop taking it. That is the first step, and it is not an overreaction, because the risk with adulterated material is contamination rather than simply wasted money.

Then ask the seller for the lab report for that batch. Their response is usually informative on its own. If you paid by a traceable method, raise it with the payment provider. If you bought through a marketplace, report the listing, since it protects the next buyer as much as you.

Keep the product rather than discarding it. If you decide to have it tested independently, you will need it.
